Details of New Orleans life include descriptions of explosion of the steamboat Louisiana (1849); working in a "private picture room," in which there were "the most vulgar indecent pieces of art"; observations of slavery; experiences being a union sympathizer during the U.S. Civil War; and activities as a physician; life as a Mormon pioneer includes details of interactions with the Mormon Church and time as a missionary to the handcart companies.

Frederick Gardiner was born on 12 November 1832 in Chalford Hill, Gloucestershire, England. He was baptized into the LDS Church in 1845 and emigrated to America in 1849. He migrated to Utah in 1851 and married Sarah Smith two years later. Gardiner moved his family back and forth from Utah to New Orleans, finally settling in Salt Lake City in 1869.
